Mark where the finish should stop
Show bearing seats, threads, gasket lands and electrical contact areas that need special treatment or masking. A coating can change an assembly interface even when the underlying machined dimension is correct. Make clear whether a dimension applies before or after finishing.
Masking is a manufacturing operation with its own access and edge conditions. For a recessed hole or narrow sealing track, discuss how the boundary will be created and inspected rather than relying on an arrow alone.
Use a visual reference for visible parts
A colour name does not define texture, gloss or which casting marks are acceptable. Identify the visible surfaces and agree a physical or otherwise controlled reference for the appearance. The underside of an industrial housing may not need the same cosmetic standard as its front face.
Cast surfaces and machined surfaces can look different after the same treatment. Review a representative sample that includes both if the contrast matters to the finished product.
Match the finish to service conditions
Describe indoor or outdoor use, exposure to cleaning chemicals, contact with mating materials and any electrical contact requirement. These details make a treatment discussion more useful than choosing a coating from a list.
If an existing specification already defines pretreatment, thickness or evaluation, send it with the inquiry. If it does not, keep these points open for review rather than assuming that every finish bearing the same name performs identically.
A finish note needs more than a colour
| Area | Detail to communicate |
|---|---|
| Visible exterior | Colour reference, texture, gloss and appearance zones |
| Bearing or locating fit | Finished dimension and masking boundary |
| Gasket land | Surface condition and treatment boundary |
| Grounding contact | Electrical contact requirement and mating area |
| Threads | Protection or post-finish operation requirements |
For your inquiry
Photographs are useful for an initial appearance discussion. For approval, lighting and screens can change how colour and gloss are perceived.
