Define what inspection must demonstrate
Inspection planning begins with the function of the component and the requirements on the controlled drawing. The purpose is to establish evidence that the agreed requirements have been met. A long measurement report is not necessarily useful if it omits the surfaces that control assembly. Before production, identify the interfaces that affect fit, alignment, sealing or other relevant functions. Make sure the latest drawing communicates those requirements clearly and consistently.
Build a shared reference system
Datums and measurement orientation help connect the drawing to the physical part. A dimension can be interpreted differently if the reference surfaces or setup are unclear. Review how the part will be located during machining and how it will be located during inspection. These do not always have to use an identical fixture, but the relationship must support a meaningful comparison with the drawing. Resolve ambiguous callouts through your normal drawing-control process before accepting a measurement plan.
Select methods suited to the features
Choose measurement methods based on the feature, tolerance and practical access. A tool that is convenient for a simple external dimension may be unsuitable for an internal relationship or a geometric requirement. Ask which methods will be used for the important characteristics and whether fixtures or specialized equipment are necessary. Capability should be confirmed for the actual project. Agree the scope of the records
Specify which characteristics must appear on a dimensional report and whether a customer template is required. State whether material documentation, finish records or other evidence must accompany the shipment. Clarify identification requirements so that reports can be associated with the correct drawing revision and production lot. A request for a certificate should identify the document and its expected content; it should not be treated as interchangeable with independent testing or product certification.
Set first-article expectations
If a first-article review is required, define its scope and approval process before manufacturing begins. Identify whether samples must represent the intended production route, what records are needed and who can authorize continuation. Explain how discrepancies will be handled and how an approved design change will be documented. The presence of a sample alone does not establish approval. The acceptance decision should reference the agreed criteria and remain traceable to the relevant revision.
Decide sampling and exception handling
Agree the inspection coverage and sampling approach appropriate to the order and its requirements. Avoid assuming that a phrase such as quality checked implies every feature is measured on every part. If full inspection of a characteristic is required, specify it. Also agree how nonconforming results are reported and whether a concession process exists. Any acceptance of a deviation should come from the authorized customer contact and be recorded, rather than inferred from informal conversation.
Connect inspection to packing and delivery
Protection and identification remain important after measurement. Define packaging needs for machined faces, coated surfaces and sensitive interfaces.
